Avalanche danger changes with elevation. The bulletin gives elevations in metres — for example “above 2400 m” — because that is precise and easy to check with a watch, phone or map.
| Region | Upper band | Middle band | Lower band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bansko (Pirin) | above 2400 m | 2000–2400 m | below 2000 m |
| Rila Lakes (Rila) | above 2400 m | 2000–2400 m | below 2000 m |
| Vitosha | above 1900 m | 1700–1900 m | below 1700 m |
Each avalanche problem also has its own elevation and aspects, for example “wind slab, north aspects, above 2200 m”.
The bands roughly follow the vegetation, but the tree line differs between slopes and valleys. Use it only as a guide — the elevation in the bulletin is what counts.
| Band | Typical terrain |
|---|---|
| Upper | Open alpine terrain above the dwarf pine. |
| Middle | Upper forest limit and dwarf pine. |
| Lower | Forest. |
